Bio
Genevieve Blanton is an emerging artist based in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Blanton received her Bachelor of Fine Art from Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville, SIUE, in 2022. During her time at SIUE her focus area was textiles with additional studies in drawing and sculpture. Blanton also studied art history and photography in Florence, Italy through SIUE’s study abroad program at the Santa Reparata International School of Art. During her undergraduate studies, Blanton was awarded additional opportunities to further her education including working as a studio assistant to St. Louis artist Anna Sumner (Sept 2018 – March 2019); a research assistant at the SIUE Museum (Aug 2021 – May 2022): and a studio assistant for professor and textile artist Laura Strand (Aug. 2022 - Present).
Blanton's art explores taboo topics such as mental illness, abuse, sexual assault, and anti-abortion laws. Throughout her life Blanton has struggled with disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar tendencies, and post-traumatic stress. Additionally, she has navigated various medical conditions and lasting physical issues from a car accident during her junior year of high school. Blanton’s conviction for addressing these taboo social and political issues comes from painful personal experience. Blanton chooses to use many of her own experiences to show vulnerability in hopes to help others not feel alone, like she once did. Many of Blanton’s current works focus on injustice in society and women banding together to support one another. Through her mixed media art and performances, Blanton explores the often-unspoken ramifications that these issues have on people, as well as to ask people to stand together and help those who need it.
